Pediatric Aftercare For Dental Procedures


Instructions Following Anesthesia


Monitor your child closely for approximately two hours following the appointment. It is often wise to keep your child on a liquid or soft diet until the anesthetic has worn off. Remind your child to refrain from touching, biting, sucking, or playing with the numb area.


Instructions Following Restorative Treatment (Filling or Crown)


  1. Be careful – lips, cheek and tongue may be numb for the first few hours, so liquids only.
  2. Avoid extremely hot or cold foods for the first few weeks, some tooth sensitivity is normal.
  3. Use children’s Tylenol or Motrin for discomfort.
  4. Take good care of your filling, do not chew ice, hard candy or gum. Remember to brush twice daily and floss.
  5. Be sure to see us for regular check-ups and contact our office if you have any concerns.

Instructions Following Pulp Treatment (Pulpotomy/Pulpectomy/Baby Root Canal)


If your child is experiencing sensitivity after this treatment, you may give your child Children’s Tylenol, Advil or Motrin as directed for the age and weight of your child. If sensitivity or discomfort continues for more than 24 hours, please contact our office.


Instructions Following an Extraction


  1. Be careful – lips, cheek and tongue may be numb for the first few hours.
  2. Apply biting pressure with a clean gauze over the extraction site for the first 30 minutes to stop bleeding.
  3. Liquids only for the first two hours, do not use a straw. Soft foods for the next 24 hours.
  4. Take children’s Tylenol or Motrin for discomfort, use ice packs on the cheek for swelling, alternating on and off every 10-15 minutes. Brush carefully before bedtime, avoid the extraction site.
  5. Be sure to see us for regular check-ups and contact our office if you have any concerns.

Instructions Following Trauma Care


  1. Rest, no contact sports or PE for as long as the doctor recommends.
  2. Soft diet for the next 3-4 days (comfort foods like mac-n-cheese, mashed potatoes, pudding, etc.)
  3. Children’s Tylenol or Motrin as needed for pain. Alternate medications every 4-6 hours for the first day or two.
  4. Gently brush the area or clean with a wet wash cloth to wipe off the affected area(s) after eating.
  5. If you note discoloration, mobility or swelling that does not reduce with ice, or if pain continues, contact our office immediately at 727-526-5900.

Instructions Following Whitening


You’ve received a 10 pk of Treswhite and a tube of Clinpro 5000.

Begin by using Clinpro 5000 at bedtime for 7-10 days before starting your bleaching (brush on one drop at bedtime) to decrease your risk of sensitivity. 

To use your Treswhite trays:

  1. Remove one package
  2. Center each tray on the arch (teeth)
  3. Gently close down and swallow
  4. Remove the hard outer tray
  5. Gently close down and swallow again
  6. Wear your Treswhite tray for 30 minutes once a day for 5-10 days for best results
  7. Remove the tray after 30 minutes, brush off excess bleach
  8. Continue to brush on Clinpro 5000 at bedtime while using your Treswhite system

  1. You should refrain from eating ice, gum, sticky or hard candy which can fracture the sealant.
  2. Regular dental checkups are recommended in order for our office to be certain the sealants remain in place.
  3. You can eat or drink immediately after receiving sealants.
  4. Contact our office if you have any concerns.
